Guide to Leather Care

Proper care and maintenance of your leather goods are essential to preserve their longevity and beauty. At Aluyâ Leather Goods, we take pride in crafting high-quality leather products built to last.

We use “full grain” vegetable-tanned leather with minimal finish and unaltered. The leather we use is NOT waterproof. It can absorb moisture and age well. Some of the natural characteristics of the grain are scars, wrinkles, veins, pores, and bites; these nuances show the quality and authenticity of the leather.

Leather is a living material that changes over time, becoming softer and acquiring a sheen. Depending on use, friction, and the areas where the owner places their hand or the favorite belt hole, the leather will develop a patina, and your product will forge its own unique character over time.

Follow these guidelines to keep your leather items looking their best.

Dust and dirt can accumulate on leather surfaces over time. Use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe down your leather goods regularly. For deeper cleaning, use a damp cloth with mild soap. Avoid using harsh chemicals or soaking the leather.

Leather must stay hydrated to maintain suppleness and prevent cracking. Apply a leather conditioner every 3-6 months. Use a clean cloth to rub a small amount of conditioner into the leather in a circular motion, then buff it with a soft brush or dry cloth.

Keep leather away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture, which can cause fading, drying, and warping. If your leather item gets wet, blot it gently with a dry cloth and let it air dry naturally.

Store leather products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid damp areas that can promote mold growth.

Store items in breathable fabric bags or pillowcases. Avoid plastic bags, which can trap moisture and lead to mold and mildew.

Stuff items like bags and shoes with tissue paper to help them retain their shape during storage. For jackets, use padded hangers to prevent distortion.

Do not overload leather bags and wallets; this can stretch the leather and alter its shape.

Oils and dirt from your hands can transfer to leather surfaces. Always handle leather products with clean hands.

Regular use helps maintain the leather’s flexibility and appearance. Avoid letting leather items sit unused for extended periods.

Leather patina is the natural sheen and color change that occurs on the surface of leather as it ages. This transformation is influenced by various factors such as exposure to sunlight, handling, and the oils from your skin. Over time, these elements combine to create a rich, lustrous finish that enhances the leather’s character and appeal.

By understanding and encouraging the patina process, you can enhance the character and longevity of your leather items.

If your leather product requires repairs, such as re-stitching or replacing hardware, contact us or any professional for repairs. Attempting repairs at home may cause more damage.

When your new leather product arrives, you may experience tightness. This is commonly experienced with leather shoes. They are not always comfortable on your feet the first time you get them because of the curvature of the shoes and your feet, but the shoes will adjust with time to fit you perfectly.

This tightness happens with other leather products like wallets and cardholders. You will experience stiffness when getting your cards in and out. Leather is a natural product. After a few weeks of regular use, the leather will mold into its new usage shape and fit perfectly.

Leather products have an initial break-in period that one must work through. For wallets and cardholders, this transformation starts the first time you put your contents in your wallet/cardholder. Each card slot works best with 1 or 2 cards, but the leather pockets are designed to fit the cards snuggly and will take some time to loosen up.

Each piece is a work of art; as it ages, it will continue to look and feel better. Care and regular maintenance will ensure the longevity of your leather products.
